Had a supah-kewl opening at Pearls in Chattanooga on Tremont (across the river from downtown)! WOW!!!!! What a place and what an event. Greg and Susan, the bygodfriendliestgenuinedownhomeartloversupersupportive people there could ever be, put on a great grand "unopening" as they called it. PBR on tap and peanuts everywhere. Being the quasi-wallflower I ended up playing and singing with the Bluegrass band there. We did some Hank Williams, traditional Bluegrass Gospel, Flatt and Scruggs and lots of others. Check out Pearls in Chattanooga. Way cool people and way cool stuff. Mary Zeman, Cornbread, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Brian Dowdall, Miz Thang and LOTS of others have stuff there. I sold 3 pieces with them that weekend!!! Lawdamighty I can buy mo paint!!!!!

Black Eyed Susans

"Till I was 10, I grew up on a flower farm outside of Baltimore, Maryland and I always loved that the Maryland State Flower was the Black Eyed Susan. Now I appreciate them even more when I see them pop up around the rough clay here in the North Carolina mountains near Asheville. When I painted this I was thinking of the flowers in a field being tossed about by a breeze. So I made a sky blue background that swirls (can't tell in the pic) and just the flower heads are floating in the air. The flowers are 5 layers of yellow and orange paint. They're very thick. The sides of the canvas are over and inch thick and painted black. Looks pretty cool hanging on the wall. "

"Blue Nude with Red Salvia" 18x18" acrylic on canvas
11/03 © Tom Cassidy

SOLD!! (Thanks Ryan!)

Blue Nude with Red Salvia

"Wheeeee! My first nude! But she's blue...hmmm...bet that means something, eh?

I guess I'm missing the flowers blooming now that most everything is getting ready for winter. I feel like this is a cool representation of a warm summer day. I see the flowers and grass being blown by the wind and a figure nearby.

The colors really pop when you see it in person and there's movement in the grass behind the flowers. Me likee. Hope you do too!"

Going...Going...GONE!

Museum benefit Pumpkin Auction at the Mennello! Happened on Thursday, October 23, at the Mennello Museum of Folk Art in Orlando. Folks bid on a piece I created for them along with other folkies/outsiders with proceeds benefitting the museum. 30 other people contributed items too. Here's what sold! A big thanks to the buyer!

The museum supplied a halloween bucket and said "do whatever you want!". So I did even though I've never sculpted anything before.

I call the piece "The Devil Stirring Up Troubles". He's about 3 feet tall. I used leftover packing foam for the body, then carved out separate pieces from the same foam for the arms, legs, head and horns. And shoes too! The tail was made from newspaper wrapped in tape. Everything was glued or stuck together with wooden skewers. Then I covered it all with papier mache and many layers of paint. The bucket was wrapped in paper mache then a thicker papier mache (PM) was used to form the edge of the cauldron. After that I added individual strips of PM to create the flames. They were twisted and turned and I was pretty pleased with the result. The interior of the bucket shows the troubles the devil is stirring up. Inside it says things like "war, envy, steal, etc.". He's the manifestation of all the badness out there. Call it bad Karma, negative thoughts or demon based...something is stirring it all up. Proceeds from the auction benefitted the Mennello Folk Art Museum in Orlando.

Leonids, Flying Buster and Christmas Trees

"My house in NC is out in the country where the stars are not shy. On a couple nights that December the Leonid meteor shower visited us.
My dog Buster said he wanted to be on a Christmas styled painting this year for a friend.
He talks. I listen."

"Buster is not related to Clifford. Buster is orange with an underbite. Clifford is red. And big. And commercialized. I'll let you know when Buster starts showing up on magnets and keychains and tshirts! (Hey! That's an idea...hehehe)"

3 Little Birds

"My tribute to Bob Marley! His song, "3 Little Birds" has always been a comfort to me. The song says '3 little birds stopped on his doorstep and said this is my message to you...don't worry bout a thing, every little thing gonna be alright'. Whenever my problems seem too great I just watch the little birds at the feeders or flying about and it brings me peace. The number 56 on the painting? That's Bob Marley's street number. He lived at 56 Hope Road...jah mon! Here's a link to the official Bob Marley web site that has the whole story about how Bob came to write the song and a realaudio clip of it too."

SOLD!! Thanks Susan!

Dreamlife

"Ever since I was a young pup I dreamed I could fly. As I got a little older I thought it'd be cool to play in a band onstage and these days I wish I wasn't so damn shy in public! This painting came about after I had been to Nude Night, the art show in Orlando, where I saw some old friends. The crowd was big and loud and instead of hugging my buds I just sort of stood there like a chimp on a rock. They wondered later to me if they had done something wrong...nope, I told em, just me being goofy. So this year...it's more social time! Look for me chatting away at a party near you!"

"Big Buster" acrylic paint on canvas 12"x18"

Big Buster

"I started laughing after I painted this version of Buster flying over the mountains. He looks more like he's got a cow body...that's why I call him Big Buster! Woooooooofmmmmmmmoooooooooooo! Notice his teeth? Poor lil Buster has a horrible underbite from when he got hit by a car as a pup. Was scary when it happened, but, now it makes him look ferociously cute!"

"Harriet's Journey" acrylic paint on canvas 12"x18"

SOLD!!

Harriet's Journey

"Imagine living in a land where you are hunted not because of a crime but just because you looked different than the rest. Imagine being owned by someone, your chldren taken from you, your friends and relatives beaten, raped, tortured, killed. Where learning to read was a crime. It's hard to believe that it wasn't that long ago. Harriet Tubman risked everything to lead slaves to relative freedom. The colors here symbolize the upturned world in which she and others lived at that time. Day was night, stars are snow, the earth dark and frightening. But they had their eyes on freedom just up the road. And Miss Harriet lead the way. Where are the Harriets, the Martins, the Malcolms, Dubois's of today?"

King Louis Armstrong

King Louis

"Bop doobie bop diddly bop! I've been a fan of "Satchmo" ever since I was a kid and got to catch him on tv specials growing up. He truly was one of a kind. Started off as a street kid and through luck and perseverance became beloved worldwide. And above all...he loved the muggles! Check him out with his "Hot Five" from the 30's for some good hot jazz."

Why Do I Chase The Cat

"Listening to the radio the other day I heard Parliament's "Atomic Dog" song. Part of the lyrics are "...Why I must be like that, why must I chase the cat?...". Immediately I thought of Buster and then I thought of me chasing things or people in life and even thought of others doing the same thing. How about you? What are you chasing after that you know you shouldn't catch?"

Frida Y Diego (Frida (Kahlo) and Diego (Rivera)

"I've loved Frida Kahlo's paintings since I was made aware of them when I was a pup. The recent film reminded me of Frida and Diego's romance and that they each had something powerful to give each other. I made this Dia De Los Muertos wedding picture of them as something like a portrait card. My gift to their spirits. Viva Pensadores de Libertad! (Roughly...Long Live Free Thinkers!)"

One Way

One Way Road to Heaven

"Have you seen The Apostle by Robert Duvall? Another one of my favorite films. He reminds me so much of my Grandfather in tone and appearance when he would pray or preach. See it if you can. It's an accurate portrait of a world that is disappearing. There's a sweetness to it that's so fine.

And it is a One Way road...and narrow too."

Sacred Heart of Jesus Ascending to Heaven

"Before I was 6 my parents and I lived in my father's house on a farm in Maryland.
On each side of the entrance wall leading to the bathroom were two paintings. One was of Jesus holding his robe open at his chest and exposing his bright orange and red, flaming heart. The other was of Mary performing the same amazing feat.

If I could expose my heart, I don't think I'd set it on fire."

But, I was thinking that both he and cats have got it made.

He does agree with that."

A face appeared.
A reminder that sometimes the ugliest are the most precious and those that are most appealing are the darkest souls."
